Summary
This article discusses research and theories of the relationship between the parents and the institutions for day care. Conclusions are based on a study exploring the experiences of 144 Dutch parents using day–care centres, and on a study of relevant literature. Because of the growing amount of working mothers, the upbringing of young children is partly professionalized. Communications between parents and professionals is crucial for the quality of day care in order to achieve continuity of care, mutual support and confidence, and to prevent confusion about the limitations of the authority of both parents and professionals. Attention is also paid to the age of entrance of the child and difficulties in acclimatisation to day care. Finally, some suggestions are given for government policy on day care and for the management of local day–care centres.
