Abstract
The nature and efficacy of psychological treatments for generalised anxiety disorder have been reviewed. Several interventions were discussed that are aimed at one of the core symptoms of the disorder: worry. Furthermore a recent development in cognitive therapy was highlighted: interventions that are not directed at the contents of the patients thoughts but rather at his thinking style and the process of his thinking. References were made to mindfulness based cognitive therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy and attention training technique. Furthermore, a new intervention was discussed for the treatment of worry: anti-worry training. This is a short program consisting of seven different phases. It is based on a modern view on the principles of counter-conditioning and can be applied in an individual setting as well as in a group setting. Research into the efficacy and the applicability of this program will have to be done.
