Een kortdurende groepsinterventie voor mensen met multiple sclerose, enkele eerste indrukken

In dit artikel beschrijven we een groepsinterventieprogramma voor mensen met de ziekte multiple sclerose (ms). Zeven patiënten uit het Academisch Ziekenhuis Vrije Universiteit werden daartoe uitgenodigd. Zes van hen volgden de gehele groepsinterventie van negen zittingen. Elke zitting duurde twee uur en behandelde een voor ms relevant thema, zoals ‘Diagnose en psychosociale problemen’ of ‘Omgaan met vermoeidheid en andere klachten’. Aan de hand van het thema wisselden deelnemers persoonlijke ervaringen uit. Zij oefenden communicatievaardigheden en leerden zich te ontspannen.Na afloop van de interventie bleek dat er geringe verschillen waren tussen scores op de vragenlijsten. De ‘psychologische toestand’ was licht verbeterd, bij een nagenoeg constant gebleven ‘fysiek functioneren’. Een halfjaar na de interventie waren de deelnemers in fysiek opzicht wel achteruitgegaan. Uit mondelinge evaluatie bleek dat de deelnemers tevreden waren over de interventie. Verder onderzoek zal moeten uitwijzen of de gevonden verschillen relevant zijn.

Abstract

We describe a group intervention program for patients with multiple sclerosis (ms). Seven patients were recruited at the academic hospital of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Six participants completed the nine-session group therapy program. Each session took two hours. Sessions were based on topics which are relevant for persons with ms, i.e. ‘The diagnosis ms and psychosocial problems’, or ‘Coping with fatigue and other symptoms’. During each session participants would exchange personal experiences. Also, communication and relaxation skills were taught. After the intervention the scores on questionnaires revealed only small differences compared to baseline-measurement. Most participants scored slightly better on ‘psychological status’, while ‘physiological functioning’ remained steady. Six months after completion most of the participants were physically deteriorated. Future research will have to ascertain whether found differences in scores are clinically relevant.
