Abstract

Feelings of guilt make clear that a moral standard has been broken. These feelings can be functional as well as dysfunctional. Dysfunctional guilt is associated with several psychological disorders. Feelings of guilt are considered to be the result of the interaction between cognitive and affective elements. On the basis of a cognitive conceptualization various possible therapeutic interventions to aid a patient in dealing with a surplus of guilt are described.
