Abstract

Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is a time–limited psychotherapy for the treatment of depression in out–patients. The therapy was developed by Klerman and associates and written down in a manual. The efficacy of IPT was established in several randomized clinical trials. IPT has been modified to treat specific age groups such as elderly and adolescents. In several studies IPT has shown to be effective in the treatment of other disorders such as dysthymia and bulimia nervosa. In the Netherlands there is increasing interest in IPT. In a first open clinical trial IPT was shown to be effective in the treatment of depressive outpatients. Further research is necessary to establish criteria to allocate patients to the different treatments of depression.
