Abstract
Thirteen patients who had recently terminated directive therapy, and their therapist, were given a structured interview about the aspects of their treatment that they experienced as either positive or negative. Critical incidents and more general aspects of both therapy and therapist were identified. The results show that the well–known characteristics of directive therapy, such as homework assignments, were regarded as important; yet, more importance was attributed to the moments during the sessions when patients gained certain insights as a result of what the therapist said or did. In the discussion, attention is focused both upon this and upon some rather unusual discrepancies in the statements of the patients.
