Abstract

Noise and psychopathology. The relationship between noise, defined as unwanted sound, and psychopathology is studied on the basis of a number of clinical cases where noise was (one of) the factors that determined the quest for help. The following items are discussed: (1) noise phobia in the context of a panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, or an obsessive-compulsive disorder; (2) noise and extreme annoyance; (3) noise and depressive phenomena and the hypersensitiveness to noise with depression; (4) the hypersensitiveness to noise with nervous breakdown and with headache. The treatment may consist of exposure procedures (in case of anxiety disorders), relaxation training and cognitive-behavioural restructuring techniques.
