Abstract
Is dissociation normal in daily life? Dissociation is not a clear concept. A growing number of phenomena in daily life are labelled as dissociative. Especially this is the case with automatisms and activities in which attention is fully absorbed. The suggestion is raised that dissociation is normal in daily life. The author of this article claims that dissociation in daily life is the exception and not the rule. In essence dissociation refers to situations in which the experience of having control is not integrated in personal consciousness. This is not the case with automatisms and activities in which attention is fully absorbed. To speak in such cases from dissociation can be seen as a mistake. If such examples are eliminated it cannot longer be held that dissociation is the rule in daily life.
