Welke aspecten van kwaliteit van leven vinden kwetsbare ouderen zelf van belang?

Samenvatting

‘Kwaliteit van leven’ is een begrip dat heel vaak gebruikt wordt zonder aan te geven wat er precies mee bedoeld wordt. De betekenis van het begrip voor ouderen zelf is weinig onderzocht. Verondersteld wordt dat kwetsbaarheid een negatieve invloed heeft op de kwaliteit van leven, maar ook dit is zelden onderzocht. In dit artikel wordt nagegaan wat kwaliteit van leven betekent voor zelfstandig wonende ouderen zelf en of het begrip voor niet-kwetsbare en kwetsbare ouderen een andere betekenis heeft. Hiertoe werden semigestructureerde interviews gehouden met 25 oudere mannen en vrouwen. Wij vonden vijf thema’s: (lichamelijke) gezondheid, geestelijk welzijn, sociale contacten, activiteiten en woning & omgeving. Voorwaarden voor een goede kwaliteit van leven waren goede medische zorg, het beschikken over een auto en voldoende financiën. Wij vonden geen verschillen tussen kwetsbare en niet-kwetsbare ouderen in de thema’s die zij belangrijk vonden voor hun kwaliteit van leven, maar de verminderde gezondheid van de kwetsbare ouderen beperkte de hoeveelheid en het soort activiteiten die zij ondernamen. Met toenemende kwetsbaarheid rapporteerden zij een gemiddeld lagere kwaliteit van leven.
