Samenvatting

Perifeer arterieel vaatlijden (pav) is niet alleen belangrijk als lokale aandoening maar vooral omdat het een indicator is van atherosclerose elders, met een groot risico op andere manifestaties van hart- en vaatziekten. Daarom is het belangrijk dat de huisartspav onderkent en de aanwezige cardiovasculaire risicofactoren adequaat aanpakt. De huisarts kan met behulp van de enkel-armindex in de praktijk de aandoening betrouwbaar zelf diagnosticeren en daarna adequaat behandelen. De loopafstand kan verbeteren door gestructureerde, liefst gesuperviseerde, looptherapie en door te stoppen met roken.
