Samenvatting

De term ‘palliatie’ is afgeleid van het Latijnse woordpallium, mantel. Palliatieve zorg dient de patiënt in de laatste levensfase te ‘omhullen met een mantel van warmte, bescherming, koestering, zorg’. Vanaf de jaren zestig zijn zorgverleners in de Angelsaksische landen zich gaan toeleggen op de aloude plicht van barmhartigheid en weldoen: wanneer alle hoop op genezing vervlogen was, noteerde men als verder beleid ‘tender love and care’ in het dossier van een patiënt.
