Tromboflebitis: een nat verbandje of is er meer aan de hand?

Samenvatting

Tromboflebitis wordt vaak beschreven als een onschuldige aandoening, die vanzelf geneest. De aandoening komt met name voor bij de oudere patiënt met varices. Recent zijn verschillende artikelen verschenen over mogelijke trombo-embolische complicaties, zoals diepe veneuze trombose en longembolieën, tijdens en na een doorgemaakte tromboflebitis.

Weliswaar is er onderzoek waaruit blijkt dat tromboflebitis gepaard gaat met een hoger risico op trombose en longembolieën, maar het absolute risico is niet dusdanig groot dat dit vergaande consequenties heeft voor het handelen van de huisarts.
