Borstkanker en menopauzale hormoontherapie

Samenvatting

Al sinds de introductie van HRT (‘hormone replacement therapy’) in de jaren zeventig is er een verhitte discussie gevoerd over de voor- en nadelen. Veronderstelde voordelen waren verlichting van symptomen, een grotere zelfwaardering en kwaliteit van leven, preventie van cardiovasculaire ziekte en een verbeterde botmineraalstatus. Het zou dus goed zijn voor alle vrouwen van 50 tot 70 jaar. De argumenten van de tegenstanders zijn gemengd; deels filosofisch – moet je de menopauze wel als een ziekte beschouwen? – en deels sceptisch – is er echt een cardiovasculaire protectie en is er niet enig verhoogd risico op kanker en trombose?
