Samenvatting
In de Lancet zijn twee totaal verschillende onderzoeken met β-blokkers voor de behandeling van hartfalen gepubliceerd. De COMET-studie (Carvedilol Or Metoprolol European Trial) vergelijkt de β-blokkers metoprolol en carvedilol, terwijl in de CHRISTMAS-trial (Carvedilol Hibernating Reversible Ischaemia Trial: Marker of Success) carvedilol met placebo wordt vergeleken bij de behandeling van patiënten met hartfalen met een slecht functionerend myocard. 1,2 De vraag bij dit tweede onderzoek was of een verbetering van de linkerventrikelejectiefractie samen kon hangen met de aanwezigheid van een zogenaamd hibernating myocard, letterlijk ‘hartweefsel in winterslaap’, dat wil zeggen: het is in leven, maar minder contractiel.
