Samenvatting

Het orale bloedsuikerverlagende metformine, gebruikt bij diabetes mellitus type 2, heeft in een wat bedenkelijk daglicht gestaan wegens de zeldzame kans op melkzuuracidose. De ‘British National Formulary’ zegt zelfs dat elke predispositie voor melkzuuracidose een contra-indicatie is voor het gebruik van metformine. Daarbij had men toevallig over het hoofd gezien dat diabetes mellitus op zichzelf al een predispositie vormt voor melkzuuracidose.
