Samenvatting

Linkerventrikelhypertrofie (LVH) is een ongunstig kenmerk (een ‘risico-indicator’) bij hypertensie. In deze patiëntengroep is het risico van cardiovasculaire gebeurtenissen belangrijk hoger: dit geldt voor mortaliteit en morbiditeit als gevolg van hartfalen, voor boezemwoelen (atriumfibrilleren), plotselinge dood en beroerte. LVH is de meest zichtbare uiting van eindorgaanschade bij hypertensie. Er zijn veel onderzoeken gedaan, waarbij gezocht is naar de beste geneesmiddelen om LVH te verminderen, of andere surrogaatmerkers van eindorgaanschade bij hypertensie te verbeteren (zoals microproteïnurie of endotheel-dysfunctie).
