Verschillende epidemiologische onderzoeken hebben waarschijnlijk gemaakt dat het innemen van extra foliumzuur rond de conceptie en in de eerste weken van de zwangerschap het risico op neurale buisdefecten verkleint (vergelijk mfm 2001; 39: 450-1).
