Samenvatting
Ernstige vormen van urineweginfecties vereisen directe behandeling met antibiotica. Vaak wordt de patiënt daarvoor opgenomen in een ziekenhuis en behandeld met parenterale middelen (amoxicilline, co-trimoxazol, gentamycine, cefalosporines of fluorochinolonen). Dit soort behandelingen berust doorgaans niet op ‘Evidence-based medicine’. In feite wordt er van de onbewezen opvatting uitgegaan dat orale therapieën met antibiotica onvoldoende effect hebben in vergelijking met een parenterale therapie.
