Meer dan 2.000 jaar heeft asbest de mensheid geïntrigeerd; pas de afgelopen twintig jaar wordt het beschouwd als een ernstig probleem. Een overzichtsartikel in Scientific American geeft de historie van asbest, vanaf 300 v. Chr. Het beschrijft de grote verschillen in gevaar van de verschillende asbestvezelvarianten. Het meest (95%) gebruikte zachte chryotile is relatief onschuldig vergeleken met de harde soorten zoals actimolide of crocidolite.
