Abstract
In this paper it is shown that the sensorless “INFORM method” for position detection of permanent magnet synchronous machines can be applied to failure-critical transiently operated permanent magnet synchronous machines in position-, speed- and torque-controlled applications. After a short presentation of the INFORM method, its integration into a torque-, speed- and load observer is shown. The major section deals with statistical properties of the INFORM-detected angular position. Furthermore, a calculation of the failure probability evoked by an error in the angular estimation is given. An application example of the US automotive industry shows the procedure of specifying an INFORM drive according to the application profile of the drive. The presented example has started its series application in January 2003 successfully. Further series are being produced.
