Summary

The aim and limitations of thyroid function tests are indicated. The relative advantages and disadvantages of various methods of testingin vivo with radioisotopes of iodine and with technetium are discussed and compared within vitro methods, with particular reference to the assessment of thyroid status. Some recent trends in the development of thyroid tests and some particular problems are mentioned.
