Radiochemical basis of sensitisation ofStaphylococcus aureus by vitamin K5

  • Published:
Proceedings / Indian Academy of Sciences

Abstract

Vitamin K5 sensitisesStaph. aureus under oxic as well as anoxic conditions. It decomposes at room temperature and the decomposition products also show radiosensitisation. The sensitising effect is due to the reaction of cell constituents with some short-lived transients of vitamin K5. These are formed mainly by the reaction between the sensitiser and the hydroxyl radicals produced during radiolysis of water in the surrounding medium.
