Karyotypes of some varieties of barley

Summary

The karyotypes of six strains of barley are described and the results have been compared with those reported by Sharma and Mukherji (1956) for the same strains. The findings of the latter authors could not be confirmed in five strains, and the necessity to use critical cytological techniques and adequate number of cells for analysis in such studies is stressed. The role of chromosome structural differences in intra-specific differentiation is pointed out and it is shown that repatterning of the karyotype may sometimes result in genotypes of higher selection and survival value. The probable mode of origin of a pair of minute satellites present in addition to the normal two pairs in the variety B-17 is discussed.
