Abstract

A new photoelectric Raman spectrometer has been built for the measurement of small liquid samples and it has been shown the stabilized performance and good durability. As the source of exciting radiation a Toronto type mercury arc is used. Employing a 1200 lines per mm plane grating and a plane mirror, a monochromator is constructed as a special double-pass system. Raman spectra are recorded with an automatic range changing device which extends the range of intensities that can be recorded on the normal ten-inch chart.

Using the instrument, a Raman spectrum can be recorded in 10 minutes and a more accurate one can be recorded in 50 minutes with an automatic suppression device. The reproducibility is ± 0.5%. Normally, the sample volume of 10 milliliter is used for the measurement, but that of only 3 milliliter is available in some cases. The resolution is such that the fine structure of benzene 992 cm.−1 line can be clearly separated.
