Abstract
Anaerobes play a major role in the aetiology of chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM). The present study was conducted to find out the incidence of anaerobes in CSOM in coastal Karnataka region and also the changing pattern of antibiogram. In this study, a total of 120 specimens of ear discharge were included. Culture positivity was obtained in 116 cases (96.67%). The incidence of anaerobes was found to be 51.67%. Among the aerobes prevalence of Pseudoaeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus were observed, but the predominant anaerobes were the species of Bacteroides (40.21%) followed by Peptostreptococci (35.05%). Metronidazole was found to be the drug of choice for anaerobes and gentamicin for aerobes.
