Summary

50 cases of primary nasopharyngeal malignant growth have been reported from the Institute of post Graduate Medical Education & Research, Calcutta. The difficulties in diagnosis of naso-pharydgeal lession due to its anatomical situation and bizzare presentation, have been discussed. Suspicion of the growth is the most important factor in the diagnosis and it is the prime duty of E.N.T. Surgeons to diagnose the disease early when it is in curable stage.

An important aspect regarding the age incidence in this series in the number of cases with asopharyngeal maligna cy in the lower age group-below 30 years (38%). We have discussed the various modes of presentation and a comparative study has been made with the findings of other authors. Lock-jaw a presenting symptom is a notable feature in this series—12%. The modes of spread of the nasopharyngeal tumours are discussed in relation to various presentation for better knowledge and understanding of nasopharyngeal growth. Details of lock-jaw presentation and difficulties of diagnosis of nasopharyngeal neoplasm in these cases are also discussed.
