Summery

Dislocation of foot plate partial or complete is definitely a problem in stapes surgery. Methods to prevent dislocation have have been suggested. Proper appreciation of vestibular anatomy is necessary in order to plan safe removal of a dislocated foot plate. Each case presents its own problems and has to be treated as such, as is evident from the cases described above. A sunk foot plate is best left alone if it is not possible to refloat it. It does not always result in a dead ear.
