Conclusion

From the results of 45 cases of tympanoplasty presented before you, I have reason to believe that the operation is one of the major therapeutic advances of the present decade. The helplessness of the surgeon when confronted with a case of longstanding CSOM with severe functional derangement is too wellknown to be mentioned here. Here at last is a technique which possesses the dual advantage of arresting the infection and improving the hearing. An opportunity is thus provided for the unfortunate victims of this disease for social advance. It is true that the operation is time-consuming and demands surgical skill of a high order from the surgeon. In my opinion this is within the reach of all the Otologists trained in micro-surgery and unless these methods are adopted, ear surgery in India may remain static for ever.
