Abstract
Trace fossiles and their ichnofabric are conventionally used in palaeontology to reconstruct the environmental parameters of sedimentary sequences. Specific trace fossils were taken as indicators for distinct trophic and bathymetric interpretations. Studies in modern environments have shown that the pathways of palaeoecological recognition are more complex than such linear and mechanistic approaches.
The present study provides a correlation of sedimentary environments, biocoenosis, trophic modes, ichnocoenosis and the effective ichnofabric in a transect across a tidal flat in the German Wadden Sea. The diverse spectrum of lebensspuren known for a long time is obliterated by the bioturbation of the most abundant and active intrasedimentary-feeding subsurface burrowers. Thus, a more or less uniform ichnofabric is produced throughout the intertidal environment studied. The even and gently sloping tidal flats at the western side of the Jade Channel are essentially controlled by two basic parameters, i.e., hydrodynamic energy and time of submergence, respectively emergence. The endobenthic macrofauna inhabiting this environment results in a diverse ichnocoenosis which is studied along a transect from the salt marshes down to the sand flats bordering the low water line at the main channel. The spatial grain size distribution displays a clear fining-up zonation from the low water to the high water line, corresponding with the decrease in hydrodynamic energy. According to this energy decrease and the semi-sheltered position the sediment distribution ranges from fine sand close to the low water line to the typical mud flat near the silting up zone. The intrasedimentary and surficial TOC values correlate inverse to the grain size distribution, i.e. organic food sources increase towards the high water line. Due to the broad variety of food sources different trophic life modes of endobenthic organmisms occur simultaneously within the same zone. According to the diversity and high abundance of the endobenthos the intertidal environment displays a characteristic ichnocoenosis which also reflects the different trophic modes.
Converting the lebensspuren-types of this ichnocoenosis into trace-fossils in the sedimentary record two trace-fossil types may potentially occur along the transect, (i) theScolithos-type and (ii) theChondrites-type. However, the effective ichnofabric is dominated by theChondrites-type due to both high abundance and intrasedimentary activity of the burrowing speciesHeteromastus filiformis andScoloplos armiger. TheScolithos-Type in the silting-up zone and the salt marsh originate from phytoturbation which has so far not been taken into consideration by palaeoecological interpretation of this trace-fossil type.
