Abstract

In the Couvin area, southern Belgium, the first appearance ofPolygnathus hemiansatus and other conodont taxa permit an approximate positioning of the Eifelian-Givetian boundary in the lower part of the Hanonet Formation. This level is about 42 m below the former Couvinian-Givetian boundary and near the top of the brachiopodSpinatrypa (Invertrypa) fasciplicata/kelusiana concurrent range Zone. Characteristics of the Middle Devonian Great Gap are recognized in the upper part of the underlying Jemelle Formation. The paleoenvironment of the late Eifelian-early Givetian succession is outlined. The most stratigraphically relevant conodont taxa are figured and some taxa are discussed.

Kurzfassung

Im Gebiet um Couvin, S-Belgien, wurde erstmalsPolygnathus hemiansatus und andere Conodonten-Taxa gefunden. Dies erlaubt eine ungefähre Einstufung der Eifel-Givet-Grenze in den unteren Teil der Hanonet Formation. Dieses Niveau befindet sich 42 m unterhalb der früheren Couvin-Givet-Grenze und nahe dem Top derSpinatrypa (Invertrypa) fasciplicata/kelusiana Brachiopoden-Zone. Charakteristika des mittel-devonischen ‘Great Gap’ wurden im oberen Teil der unterlagernden Jemelle Formation erkannt. Das Paläo-‘Environment’ der spät-eifelischen bis früh-givetischen Abfolgen wird umrissen. Die stratigraphisch wichtigsten Conodonten-Taxa werden abgebildet, andere diskutiert.
