Abstract
A permineralized plant fragment was discovered in black siliceous shales („Kieselschiefer“) of upper Tournaisian (Lower Carboniferous) age in the southern part of the Kellerwald (N-Hesse, Germany). It is assigned toKalymma Unger 1856, a formgenus for anatomically preserved rachides of the Calamopityaceae, a distinct group of early pteridosperms. An emended diagnosis for the genus is presented. The framework of the cell walls and associated thread-like structures of putative fungal origin were rapidly encrusted by microcrystalline apatite and subsequently enclosed in a siliceous matrix. Early diagenetic permineralisation favored excellent preservation of anatomical details.
