Summary

□ Physiologically, an influence of sex steroids on the antioxidative capacity can be seen at least as a short-term effect. First of all the steroid effects are due to the estrogen component rather than the progestin component.

□ The antioxidative potential of natural estrogens in several times higher than that of vitamin E. Long-term studies should be performed to verify this in perimenopausal hormone replacement.
