Enlargement of multiple cavernous hemangioma of the liver in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus: a report of four cases

Abstract

Multiple lesions of hepatic cavernous hemangioma (HCH) were incidentally found in four patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Repeated abdominal ultrasonography revealed that their HCH had a clear tendency to increase in both number and size during an extended follow-up period, suggesting the presence of a trophic factor for HCH in the patients with SLE, such as the altered estrogen metabolism. It is important to recognize HCH as a common complication of SLE to avoid unnecessary invasive diagnostic procedures.
