The U.S. Trade Deficits: Product Quality and Competitive Pricing May be the Solution

Abstract

The triple digit U.S. trade deficit which began during 1984 reached a peak of $170.32 billion in 1987. To overcome deficit problems, the U.S. joined with six other industrialized nations to maintain a reasonable value for the dollar and stable exchange rates. This has helped in cutting the trade deficit to a small extent. The long-run strategies should focus on regaining competitiveness in global markets. This study was designed to determine the awareness of trade deficits and the attitude towards U.S. made products. Responses provided by 178 households showed that the majority were aware of the balance of payment problem and bought foreign products because they were lower in price, better in quality, and they were easily available.
