Contrast roentgenography—A diagnostic and prognostic test for eustachian tube patency

Abstract

Contrast roentgenographic evaluation of eustachian tubal function in perforation of tympanic membrane was done by retrograde technique in 10 patients and by prograde technique in 43 ears. Patients having blocked eustachian tubes were subjected to repeat prograde contrast evaluation after a course of treatment. Prograde technique was found to be simple, reliable and better than retrograde technique. It was found that site of obstruction has got some prognostic value as far as treatment of blocked eustachian tube is concerned. This method was, therefore, considered to be a valuable adjunct to the currently available methods of assessing eustachian tubal function and for predicting prognosis after treatment.
