The chromosomes of Royle’s pika, Ochotona roylei, (Mammalia, Lagomorpha)

The karyotype ofOchotona roylei (Ogilby, 1839) from bone marrow somatic metaphases was studied by means of standard karyological staining as well as banding methods (G, C and silver NOR)

Abstract

The diploid number ofO. roylei is 62. The resulting karyotype morphology suggests the inclusion ofO. roylei, together withO. rufescens, O. macrotis andO. rutila, in the 2nd cytotaxonomic group of Vorontsov and Ivanitskaya, 1973. This grouping also meets systematic and biogeographic considerations.
