Conclusion
The tendency to rumination is a universal phenomenon in infants, and its persistence in adult life indicates the somatic projection of psychic conflicts as well as emotional immaturity and sometimes distinct regression. True rumination is rare, although thetendency to rumination may be observed in gastric neuroses and peptic ulcer, especially in persons having personality difficulties. The physician should investigate the emotional conflicts of these patients and assist in correcting the reactions. The obsessive-compulsive psychodynamic reaction must be analyzed even in the presence of conversion-hysteria symptoms.
