Paroxysmal trigeminal neuralgia: Review of 120 cases

  • Published:
Irish Journal of Medical Science Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Summary

A review of the literature on paroxysmal trigeminal neuralgia is presented and a survey of 120 cases is reported. Three case reports were selected to emphasize some aspects of the condition. The use of the terms essential and secondary neuralgia are discouraged. The blood picture was monitored every month while patients were on carbamazepine therapy and attention is drawn to the value of this drug in contrast to surgery. It is recommended that most cases should be treated medically unless the patient develops signs of secondary involvement of the trigeminal nerve.
