Microwave angle-of-arrival measurements under anomalous tropospheric propagation conditions

Abstract

The operation is described of a diagnostic system designed to measure accurately the angle-of-arrival of tropospheric microwave signals at X-band frequencies in situations typical of terrestrial communications links; relative amplitudes, angles-of-arrival and relative path delays under multipath conditions are also accessible using the system. The results presented here indicate that, under single-path conditions, significant variations in angle-of-arrival in the vertical plane occur regularly and, further, that in many instances these variations exhibit a wave-like character.

Les auteurs décrivent un système diagnostique conçu pour mesurer avec précision l’angle d’arrivée de signaux hyperfréquences dans des conditions typiques de liaisons terrestres. Les amplitudes relatives, les angles d’arrivée et les retards de temps de propagation sont également mesurables par ce système dans les conditions de trajets multiples. Les résultats présentés ici indiquent également que dans le cas d’un trajet unique il n’est pas rare de constater des variations non négligeables de l’angle d’arrivée dans le plan vertical et de plus ces variations présentent souvent un caractère ondulatoire.
