The estimation of worst-month precipitation attenuation probabilities in microwave systems design

Estimation des probabilités d’affaiblissement par les précipitations pendant le mois le plus défavorable en vue de la conception de systèmes hyperfréquences

Abstract

Two basic approaches to the definition of a worst month are analyzed: one employs the annual extreme event, while the other makes use of the calendar month averages of the extreme values of the parameter under consideration. Using rainfall data for a number of widely separated locations, both methods are found to exhibit similar power-law relations with respect to long-term (annual) statistics. A clear climatological dependence is observed in the parameters of this relationship. It is concluded that within a region of known climatological characteristics the worst-month ratio for precipitation intensity or rain attenuation may be derived directly from available long-term statistics.

Deux définitions possibles du mois le plus défavorable sont analysées: l’une tient compte de l’événement extrême annuel et l’autre des moyennes mensuelles des valeurs extrêmes des paramètres considérés. Ces deux méthodes, appliquées à des mesures de précipitations à des endroits très éloignés font apparaître des relations de loi de puissance semblables en accord avec les statistiques à long terme. Une dépendance climatologique évidente existe entre les paramètres de cette relation. On conclut que dans une région de caractéristiques climatologiques connues, les intensités de précipitations et les affaiblissements du mois le moins favorable peuvent être déduits des statistiques à long terme.
