Cytology and endoscopy: interest and pitfalls — example of endoscopic ultrasound

  • Published:
Acta Endoscopica

Conclusions

EUS-FNA is a reliable technique with a high sensitivity and specificity. Experience both on the endoscopic and the cytopathologist side is the key factor for improved performance. New liquidbased cytology techniques seem promising to decrease the rate of non contributory specimens but these techniques should not replace a multidisciplinary approach to biliopancreatic disease. Anatomoclinical correlation remains indeed essential for a correct interpretation of the specimen obtained by FNA.
