Présentée pour la première fois à San Francisco en mai 2000, la capsule endoscopique permet depuis 2001 en Europe, l’exploration non invasive et complète de la totalité de l’intestin grêle. Sa distribution par la société Given Imaging LTD a été rapide pour atteindre 50 000 capsules ingérées en Europe (200 000 dans le monde) réparties sur 758 stations de travail (2250 dans le monde). La première indication de vidéocapsule reste l’hémorragie digestive inexpliquée. Cette nouvelle technique d’exploration de l’intestin grêle a su prendre ici une place prépondérante par son caractère non invasif, son innocuité et sa simplicité.
Summary
Presented for the first time at San Francisco, in May 2000, and available in Europe since 2001, the videocapsule endoscopy (VCE) provides a non invasive and complete investigation of the whole small bowel. Its wide distribution by Given Imaging LTD allowed 50 000 capsules to be ingested in Europe (200 000 in the world) in 758 working sites (2250 in the world).
