Considerazioni sulla idrodinamica nello Stretto di Messina

Abstract

The main characteristics of the Messina Straits are the strongest tidal currents reaching 300 cm/s or more, with the addition of other effects (wind for example). The principal tidal current M2 is particularly developped since it is maintained by a perfect phase opposition between Tyrrhenian and Ionian seas, in spite of the weak amplitude of the tidal level oscillation. In the Straits a whole series of tidal currents moreover exist: to the 1/10 diurnal one, presenting an exceptional situation inexisting in other localities. Strong turbulence is present mainly nearby the northern mouth, but in the whole Straits the currents are turbulent, with large internal waves, exceeding also 100 m and related to the tides. The level tides denotes amphydromic nodes centered nearby the northern mouths and the still.

Riassunto

Lo stretto di Messina è uno dei siti più singolari, non solo nella idrodinamica del Mediterraneo, ma su scala mondiale. Di fronte a maree relativamente deboli, si sviluppano fortissime correnti di marea, ehe sono mantenute dal gradiente di livello ehe si sviluppa lungo lo Stretto. Singoiare pure la presenza, forse solo qua così evidente, di tutta una serie di armoniche di correnti mareali, fino alle deeimodiurne. Lo Stretto è caratterizzato anche da cospicue onde interne e da fortissima turbolenza. Sono noti nodi antidromici per le maree. Oltre alle correnti di marea si sviluppano correnti da vento, in superficie; trasporti legati alia pressione atmosferica e intense correnti di densità.
