Prolapse of gastric mucosa and its possible relationship with peptic ulcer and upper gastro-intestinal hemorrhage

  • Published:
The American Journal of Digestive Diseases

Summary

Further evidence is presented to lend credence to the proposed mechanism of ulcer, gastritis, hypertrophied rugae, and eventual prolapse.

Three cases are presented which were operated for apparent complications of peptic ulcer. In each of these cases, prolapse of mucosa was found in addition to the ulcer.

Pathological study of the surgical specimens from each of the three operated cases revealed gastritis and duodenitis.

Two cases of massive upper gastrointestinal bleeding are presented with prolapsed gastric mucosa being the only positive finding in the search for the etiology. As a relatively large percentage of cases with upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage remain undiagnosed, prolapse should be considered in the differential diagnosis.

A symptom complex of nausea, bloating, and a sensation of fullness is seen frequently in cases of prolapse of antral mucosa.
