Abnormalities of the rotation of the midgut: a report of four cases

  • Published:
The American Journal of Digestive Diseases

Summary

The embryological phases of the development of the intestinal tract are reviewed with special reference to the normal and abnormal rotations occurring in the midgut. The different clinical pictures are discussed. Mesenterium commune is not a mere abnormality, but may lead to intestinal obstruction, incomplete volvulus or to difficult diagnostic problems in case of a true leftsided appendicitis. A roentgenological technique adequate to demonstrate the condition is described. A report of four observations is given.
