  • Abdominal Surgery
  • Published:
The American Journal of Digestive Diseases

Summary

1. Methods are presented for the removal of malignant tumors of the various portions of the colon without peritoneal contamination or permanent colostomy.

2. Further experience has shown the great advantage of a single stage abdomino-perineal proctosigmoidectomy with the formation of a perineal anus.

3. When properly formed of viable bowel the perineal opening has many advantages over a colostomy.

4. A permanent abdominal colostomy is rarely, if ever, required in the extirpation of carcinoma of the colon.
