Conclusions

  1. 1.

    The pH of the gastric and duodenal content of man can readily be determined in situ.

  2. 2.

    There are rapid and marked fluctuations in the pH of gastric and duodenal content in the fasting state as well as when antacids are given.

  3. 3.

    Antacids in general raise the pH of the gastric and pyloric content.
