Summary
-
1.
Literature on the respiratory reflexes from the upper respiratory passages is briefly reviewed.
-
2.
The experimental procedures employed is briefly described.
-
3.
Mechanical, chemical, and electrical stimulation of the nasal mucosa in anæsthetised dog causes acceleration of respiration with or sometimes without increase in ventilation. The response is abolished by procainization of the mucosa.
-
4.
Mechanical stimulation of the pharyngeal mucosa inhibits respiration, and the afferent path was in the glossopharyngeal nerve, and the pharyngeal branches of the vagus.
-
5.
Mechanical stimulation of the laryngeal mucosa also inhibits respiration, the impulses being mediated through the superior and inferior laryngeal branches of the vagus.
