Abstract

Present paper describes our experience of treating26 cases of malignant minor salivary gland tumours involving the nasal cavity and the paranasal sinuses(1980–84). Adenoid cystic carcinoma was the commonest lesion(59%) followed by adeno-carcinoma(29%) and muco-epidermoid carcinoma(12%). Overall,54.5 percent determinate cases survived disease free for2 years and40 percent for3 years or more. Patients who underwent radical surgery alone did somewhat better than the ones who had received pre-operative radiotherapy. We have now revised our treatment protocol and routinely perform surgery first followed by post-operative radiotherapy. Patients with adenoid cystic carcinoma had somewhat better prognosis than the adenocarcinoma or muco-epidermoid carcinoma. Prognosis also greatly depends upon the stage of the disease.
