Rhinocerebral phycomycosis

Abstract

Rhinocerebral mucormycosis is a rare opportunistic fungal infection which may prove fatal. It involves the nose, paranasal sinuses, orbit and may spread intracranially. It is usually associated with metabolic disorders, especially ketosis. Present paper describes our experience of managing five such cases, two of which died. An early diagnosis and prompt agressive therapy in the form of local surgical correction of underlying disorder plus administration of amphotericin B are essential.
